Why do the Magi matter?

In Matthew 2:1–12, visitors from the East seek the child while Herod responds with anxiety and calculation. Western Epiphany readings often draw attention to Jesus being recognised beyond his immediate people. The passage gives three kinds of gifts. It does not state that there were exactly three visitors or supply their later traditional names.

What is Theophany?

At Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3:13–17, the narrative describes Jesus, the Spirit and a voice from heaven. Eastern Orthodox worship reads this through Trinitarian belief. The blessing of water is a characteristic part of the feast. Its meaning concerns God’s action in the world, rather than water functioning as an independent magical substance.

Why can the same name suggest different events?

Church traditions developed different emphases within the wider theme of Christ becoming known. Anglican Epiphany resources, for example, connect the Magi, baptism and the wedding at Cana. Read John 2:1–11 to see how a sign reveals Jesus’ glory in that Gospel. A shared festival name does not mean every church uses precisely the same readings or service.

How should I approach a local observance?

Check whether the community is celebrating the Magi, Theophany or another part of the season, and confirm its calendar. A procession, house blessing or water blessing has a local setting as well as a theological meaning. Asking someone to explain the practice is more useful than assuming it represents every Christian community.
