The Gospels portray Jesus teaching about God’s kingdom, repentance, love of God and neighbour, forgiveness, generosity and the responsibilities that accompany belief. Readings of these teachings differ, especially when readers move from an ancient setting to a present-day decision.
Read a teaching in its setting
Mark 1:14–15 presents Jesus announcing God’s kingdom and calling for repentance and belief. Mark 12:28–34 joins love of God with love of neighbour. These passages help identify central themes without reducing the whole teaching to a slogan.
Include the demanding passages
Matthew 5:38–48 addresses retaliation and love of enemies. Luke 10:25–37 presents a story about practical mercy. Mark 10:17–31 raises difficult questions about wealth. Consider who is addressed, what kind of teaching this is, and how a proposed application follows from it.
Distinguish description from application
Explaining what a Gospel portrays Jesus teaching is one task. Reconstructing the precise words of the historical Jesus is another. Deciding how to live by a teaching adds theological and ethical judgment. The interpretation comparisons on this site make those different questions visible.

Scripture is evidence for what a text says. Its interpretation and historical reliability require further assessment.
